ASHRAE is an international professional society dedicated to advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The organization鈥檚 mission focuses on advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related fields. It seeks to achieve this mission in part by setting standards that help ensure people can live, work, and thrive in indoor spaces.

Shichao Liu has been recognized with a Distinguished Service Award, which is given to members of ASHRAE who have served the society faithfully and with distinction on committees or otherwise given freely of their time and talent.

Rachel Hurley is one of only 19 students worldwide selected by ASHRAE to receive the prestigious Graduate Student Grant-in-Aid for 2025鈥?6. The award provides up to $10,000 to full-time graduate students pursuing education related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration technologies. Hurley is one of just two of this year鈥檚 recipients also named to the Life Members Club, an honor reserved for the top-rated applicants. The award considers academic performance and GPA, quality of thesis and relevance to ASHRAE, the advisors鈥?recommendation, and an overall assessment of the likelihood for future involvement within ASHRAE. The award is supported by a financial contribution from the ASHRAE Life Members Club. Hurley will use the grant for research she is conducting during the 2025鈥?6 academic year that focuses on how building material characteristics influence volatile organic compounds from wildfire smoke when they enter an indoor environment.

The next stage of Hurley鈥檚 research will focus on the impacts of prescribed burning on indoor wildfire pollution persistence in Oregon. 鈥淵ou find yourself constantly asking different research questions during your PhD that may slightly fall outside of the scope of current projects, and awards such as the Grant-in-Aid enable me to pursue questions that I may not be able to otherwise,鈥?said Hurley. 鈥淎lthough my primary research focuses on indoor environments in wildfire-prone areas, such as the western U.S., I am very curious about the extent of indoor wildfire smoke persistence in areas impacted by long-range smoke transport, such as here in Massachusetts. For instance, how might wildfire smoke that travels to the Northeast from fires thousands of miles away threaten our indoor air quality long term? Is this a problem we should think about? These are questions that nobody knows the answers to quite yet and I鈥檓 excited to explore.鈥?lt;/span>

Tue, 19 Aug 2025 12:00:00 +0000 jcain /news/announcements/civil-environmental-and-architectural-engineering-faculty-member-and-phd-candidate-recognized The Early Research Experience in E-Term (EREE) Program: Goals and Impact /news/announcements/early-research-experience-e-term-eree-program-goals-and-impact
The goal of the WPI Early Research Experience in E-Term (EREE) program is to create a pathway into a research career for students who may not have the same opportunity provided to them. As a result, the EREE program creates a diverse community of students in first-time paid summer research positions at WPI. Additionally, EREE has been the method to support students on NSF grants where assistance in being placed in a summer position is offered, such as the NSF S-STEM grants: PASS-CS, CoMPASS, and ROSE-HUB I/UCRC; and for supporting a summer research fellowship for the Strauss and Charles O. Thompson Awards. Additionally, the professional development programming (SPuDS) through EREE is open and offered to all students in summer research at WPI. Currently, SPuDS hosts a combined: 4 REU sites; the EREE students; and these STAR Fellowships: Manning/Leser, Spencer, LaPre, STAR, and Neuroscience; as well as other volunteer research students working independently with other WPI faculty.

The program:

The EREE program funds and supports first- and second-year WPI undergraduate students through embedment in an authentic summer research experience, beyond lecture or laboratory courses. The research activities are diverse, since students work in groups representing all academic departments at WPI. Through immersion in STEM-based labs across WPI, these research experiences are mentored, in-person projects lasting 10-weeks. Students learn a variety of skills in their groups, including hands-on research techniques, data analysis, and presentation of results (oral, written) that align with their respective research areas. EREE creates authentic research experiences for WPI undergraduate students who are in the early stages of their academic career with technical, hands-on research and professional development activities. Students present their work via the poster symposium at the Undergraduate Summer Research Showcase.

Supplemental professional development training:

Student participants work full-time in their respective research groups and receive professional development training through the Summer Professional Undergraduate Development Series (SPuDS), which are organized and presented to equip participants with toolkits to build confidence in preparation for new opportunities and that is widely applicable in their academic and professional careers. Collectively, this project provides training and opportunities to increase learning and retention in STEM training, build self-confidence, and enhance students鈥?perceptions of their abilities. These sessions positively promoted life skills learning outside of conducting research and formation of a network. The SPuDS training sessions are facilitated by current WPI faculty and staff:

Teaching, mentoring, volunteering, life fulfilment, and career planning

What鈥檚 my story? Early involvement in faculty mentored, formalized, and sustained research is particularly impactful on student鈥檚 careers. Projects are chosen from faculty proposals designed for early researchers. Research groups from almost all academic departments are represented, covering a variety of project areas and training experiences. Student participants are selected based on their applications and project interests, and preference was given to students with limited-to-no research experience. Faculty and graduate student mentors attend pre-program training for how to mentor members of underrepresented groups.

EREE is a high demand summer research opportunity. Many faculty proposed projects; yet less than half are chosen. Even fewer percentages of students are selected from the applicant pool. The supply of paid research positions at WPI is low due to a limited number of research groups with openings and funding. EREE reaches a variety of students on the WPI campus, including those from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM, students who may not otherwise afford to take an unpaid position, and international students who may not be eligible for research positions with citizenship restrictions. Since inception in 2019, the number of student and faculty applications received for EREE has far exceeded the actual number of students that we were able to support through current funding. EREE provides housing as needed. One of our goals is to reach students who may not be able to take an unpaid volunteer research experience due to financial need. An emphasis of EREE is to help students build a foundation to be successful for future research programs, scholarships, and graduate school applications. Past EREE cohort participants express interest in continuing research either with their EREE research group or elsewhere on or off campus.
Mon, 28 Jul 2025 12:00:00 +0000 dfiorentino /news/announcements/early-research-experience-e-term-eree-program-goals-and-impact Graduating Great Minds CoMPASS (GMC) Scholars: NSF grant supported local Worcester students at WPI /news/announcements/graduating-great-minds-compass-gmc-scholars-nsf-grant-supported-local-worcester-students-wpi
Nine WPI Great Minds CoMPASS (GMC) scholars in the Class of 2025 are graduating in May. The GMC scholarship program supports alumni from the Worcester Public School (WPS) district to attend WPI; but it is not just a financial scholarship 鈥?GMC recipients are part of a holistic student-centered program where they attend quarterly mentor meetings, engage in professional development seminars, participated in summer research programs, and many accelerated their degrees by taking summer courses. The GMC scholars did this with help from a small but mighty support team of WPI staff, administrators, and faculty/staff: Kathy Chen, Debra Boucher, and Jess Rosewitz.

The first cohort of GMC scholars was recruited in 2019, when WPI was awarded the CoMPASS grant from NSF (Connecting Mentor Partners for Academic Success of Undergraduates in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics). Since then, the support team has leveraged the NSF grant to drive institutional change at WPI to support students. GMC scholars know who their people are at WPI, who they can ask for assistance, and who they can turn to in times of need or just to check-in; the team has been there for the students since their matriculation to WPI four years ago. But it鈥檚 not just continuous ad hoc support; the team celebrates the GMC scholars鈥?achievements, and this year鈥檚 graduates are exceptional.

As they graduate with their bachelor鈥檚 degrees, four have already accepted full-time jobs in their field, having taken advantage of the Heebner Career Development Center. Three are completing their bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in 4 years by accelerating their degree programs and taking summer courses. Two are earning their Initial Teaching License through the WPI Teacher Prep Program, and one is also a Noyce Scholar, committed to teaching in a high needs school after graduation. Finally, two more are continuing at WPI to complete their master鈥檚 degrees in the coming academic year. These students have taken the opportunities of WPI and carved their own pathways toward the futures they envision for themselves.

While the NSF grant supporting two cohorts of GMC scholars is wrapping up, WPI has learned a lot about the kinds of supports and systems that students need to thrive. The Great Minds Scholar program continues, funded by alumni donations, and will welcome an even bigger cohort of students in the fall. Undergraduate Studies will continue to support these students by building institutional structures in collaboration with Admissions, Academic Advising, ODIME, and Residential life and build upon the high-impact practices and infrastructure needed for WPI students to thrive.

Fri, 02 May 2025 12:00:00 +0000 amero /news/announcements/graduating-great-minds-compass-gmc-scholars-nsf-grant-supported-local-worcester-students-wpi New Members Inducted to National Engineering Honor Society Tau Beta Pi /news/announcements/new-members-inducted-national-engineering-honor-society-tau-beta-pi
Congratulations to the newly inducted members of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.

Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 to honor academic achievement and outstanding character. WPI鈥檚 Massachusetts Alpha Chapter, the first chapter in New England, was founded in 1910. In addition to the students who were inducted last night, we had the honor of inducting two Eminent Engineers, Professors Andrew Teixeira of Chemical Engineering and Fiona Zoutendyk of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

Please join us in congratulating their achievement!

Tau Beta Pi. Integrity and Excellence in Engineering.

Justina Amoako, MS, Manufacturing Engineering

Gemma Baldwim 鈥?7, Environmental Engineering

Octavio Bittar 鈥?7, Electrical and Computer Engineering

Courtney Brady 鈥?7, Biomedical Engineering

Allison Califano MS, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Kevin Collins 鈥?7, Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Abigail Coolidge 鈥?7, Architectural Engineering

Ethan Curley 鈥?6, Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Khang Diep 鈥?7, Robotics Engineering

Ryann Dionne 鈥?5, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Halim Faker 鈥?5, Industrial Engineering

Christopher Ferrarotti 鈥?7, Electrical and Computer Engineering

Samantha Germano, MS, Systems Engineering

Noah Gibbs 鈥?7, Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Joshua Gifford 鈥?7, Robotics Engineering

Veronika Gorski, MS, Biomedical Engineering

Jeremy Hudon 鈥?6, Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Marshall Ismail, MS, Mechanical Engineering

Amelia Kokernak PhD, Aerospace Engineering

Nicholas Lentino 鈥?7, Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Kathryn McDonagh 鈥?7, Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Brynn McElligott 鈥?7 Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Collin Mello, MS, Fire Protection Engineering

Everett Mosher 鈥?6, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Sofia Murphy 鈥?7 Robotics Engineering

Sofia Pantano 鈥?7 Chemical Engineering

Fiona Prendergast 鈥?6 Robotics Engineering

Frederick Smith '26, Engineering

Anthony Virone, MS, Robotics Engineering

Maxwell Wiesenfeld 鈥?7 Architectural Engineering

Fan Yang, MS, Mechanical Engineering

Alexandr Zilberleyb 鈥?7, Robotics Engineering

Thu, 01 May 2025 12:00:00 +0000 amduffy /news/announcements/new-members-inducted-national-engineering-honor-society-tau-beta-pi New Grant to Fund Research Exploring AI and AR in Architectural Design Education /news/announcements/new-grant-fund-research-exploring-ai-and-ar-architectural-design-education

Shichao Liu

Augmented reality (AR) benefits architectural designers by enabling 3D design presentations while maintaining physical interaction with collaborators and stakeholders. With a $399,978 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Architectural Engineering Assistant Professor Shichao Liu is leading a three-year project to develop and test AI-empowered models within AR for effectiveness in architectural design studios at WPI and Drexel University.

鈥淎rchitectural engineers require extensive collaboration among architects, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders, said Liu. 鈥淎I-empowered AR has the potential to be a powerful tool for visual ideation and representation during collaborative conceptual design and prototyping.鈥?lt;/span>

As principal investigator (PI), Liu will be joined on the project by two WPI co-PIs: Gillian Smith, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and director of the WPI Interactive Media and Game Development program, and Soroush Farzin, assistant teaching professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering. Kimberly LeChasseur, senior research & evaluation associate in the Morgan Teaching & Learning Center, will evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tools.

Currently, AR is primarily used in demonstration settings, often serving as the final step to showcase architectural designs to clients, Liu said. A key barrier to AR is that AR tools lack the capability to facilitate rapid prototyping and idea exploration. Unlike computers or sketches, which allow for quick iterations, AR systems are complex to operate and often slower in graphic response. While AR provides an immersive display of models, the creation process leading up to this stage remains challenging.

AI-generated image

The advent of generative AI, particularly through diffusion models, could revolutionize this process by enabling content creation in AR through verbal prompts, Liu said. This would mean that users, whether students or professional designers, no longer need to create models on computers and transfer them to AR for brainstorming or collaborative design. Instead, prototyping and conceptual design could take place directly within the AR environment, simplifying the creative process and enhancing collaborative potential.

Liu said that if the WPI researchers are successful in developing AI-empowered AR, the technology could be tested in architectural firms, which could lead to innovative tools for industry professionals that enhance ideation, collaboration, and impact.
Tue, 26 Nov 2024 12:00:00 +0000 leckelbecker /news/announcements/new-grant-fund-research-exploring-ai-and-ar-architectural-design-education CEAE PhD Students Rachel Hurley and Xingtong Guo Present at the Indoor Air Conference /news/announcements/ceae-phd-students-rachel-hurley-and-xingtong-guo-present-indoor-air-conference

Rachel Hurley, Shichao Liu, Xingtong Guo

CEAE PhD students Rachel Hurley and Xingtong Guo present at the Indoor Air Conference. The award's focus is to fuel the entrepreneurial spirit through annual funding of a single viable invention.

This award will be given annually. The duration of the award shall not exceed 18 months and will be a grant of up to $25,000. It may be given to an individual or group involved in the invention of a product in order to assist in the process of moving the invention toward commercialization. The award may be given to support innovative ideas or the development of commercial products. Ideally, the recipients should be either a part of an existing small business enterprise or in the process of trying to establish a small business. This is not a business plan contest. Many diverse and high quality proposals are received making it difficult to select one winner. The structure in Green Hill Park honors the more than 300 men and women from Worcester who died in the Great War. The new memorial was designed by Steven Van Dessel, associate professor civil and environmental engineering and director of the architectural engineering program. The dedication was featured in the Telegram & Gazette.

Background:

In 1928 the city of Worcester dedicated 鈥淢emorial Grove鈥?in Green Hill Park to commemorate the victims of the war. The grove consisted of over 350 trees planted in a grid like fashion on the uppermost slope of the park, each tree representing one of the citizens that has died during the war. The grove also included a circular meeting area consisting of a fieldstone wall. Over the years, the memorial grove had fallen in disrepair with many of the trees and other elements of the memorial disappearing or in serious decay. The city was committed to reestablish the memorial in preparation of the centennial of the end of WW1.

The new memorial site was designed surrounding the existing circular gathering place and fieldstone wall. The new memorial is composed of over 400 solid metal posts made from weathering steel that stand 20 feet tall 鈥?each representing one of the victims coming from Worcester. The posts stand together in an embracing formation, and collectively provide a place for contemplation and enjoyment of the elevated view. As part of the redesign 鈥?a new pathway and entry was also created from the park鈥檚 central access road. The opposing placement of memorial posts creates an optical illusion of movement when viewed from a distance 鈥?which is designed to draw park visitors towards the memorial when passing the road.

Memorial Design: Professor Steven Van Dessel, CEE Department, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineer of Record: Weston & Sampson

Mon, 30 Nov 2020 12:00:00 +0000 cbwamback /news/announcements/wpi-civil-engineering-professor-and-director-architectural-engineering-program WPI Celebrates Arts & Sciences Week 2020 October 5-10 /news/announcements/wpi-celebrates-arts-sciences-week-2020-october-5-10
The School of Arts & Sciences will hold the third annual WPI Arts & Sciences Week from October 5 to 10, 2020.
