October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, WPI Police collaborated with the YWCA to host the An Empty Place at the Table exhibition at the Campus Center from Monday, October 28th, to Friday, November 1st. This tribute of remembrance honors those who have lost their lives to domestic violence in the past year in Massachusetts. The names of every victim are inscribed onto each place setting, creating a powerful display of the family's loved ones.

An Empty Place at the Table gives an opportunity to inform students of the important signs and dangers of domestic violence and raises awareness of the services and resources available to them within and beyond the University. WE ARE EXCITED TO HAVE THE NEW STUDENTS JOIN THE WPI CAMPUS!

We hope you had a great summer and are ready for an exciting and Safe New Year 2024-2025. As the summer comes to an end and we prepare together for the academic year, we would like to remind everyone of the safety tips.

Tips for walking on or around campus (day or night):

When walking at night, use the best-lighted route, avoid walking alone, and always remain alert (do NOT use headphones or text), be aware of the Blue Line phone's locations.
Use WPI VPA Transportation Services or call WPI Police for safety transports.
When walking to your car, have your keys out and ready.
Look around you as you walk, observe who and what is around you (become more aware of your surroundings).
If you think someone is following you, cross the street or walk faster. Call the Police.
Become familiar with your routes, you will more easily notice things and people that seem out of place.
Notice on your routes places where you can find safety and a phone (store, emergency call boxes, pay phones, etc.).
If your purse, bag, backpack, etc., is snatched, do NOT fight, avoid the risk of injury, and just report the incident to the Police.
Keep your cell phone charged and always ready for use in an emergency. Program emergency numbers in your phone for faster access to the Police.

Be Aware: Protect Yourself from Scams

WPI Campus Police, the Dean of Students Office, and International House have been made aware of recent scams targeting students through social media, phone calls, and email. Unfortunately, this has been a costly lesson for some of our students over the past month. WPI Campus Police, The Dean of Students Office, and International House want you to be aware of the risks and have some sense of how you can avoid falling victim.

To trick victims into paying them, scammers may:

Prey on worries related to visas, taxes, and/or studying and working in the US. Often posing as government officials鈥攅ither of the U.S. or other countries鈥攖hey tell victims there is a problem with their paperwork and demand money to fix it.
Tell victims that a family member is ill or injured or has been arrested or detained, and demand money.
Tell victims there is a warrant issued for their arrest, and/or a deportation order, and demand money.
Threaten to share compromising information about a victim to employers, family, or friends if they do not make payment.
Insist on keeping you on the phone while you take out your money. This is to monitor your interactions with others, it is not a normal request and should immediately raise red flags.
Insist victims buy gift cards or electronic equipment, or pay money up front as a condition of a job offer or other situation. This is not a practice of a legitimate company or business.

To protect yourself:

Never send money or give banking access to someone you do not personally know.
Never give your personal identification information to someone you do not personally know.
Never confirm your personal information for someone you do not personally know, even if they have your correct information.
If someone threatens you by phone or email, call or walk into WPI Campus Police, the Dean of Students, or International House.

Ask for help. You are not alone. Dean of Students staff, International House staff, and WPI Campus Police are available to help determine if something is legitimate or suspicious. Accepted Student Days: Parking Impact (April 3, 10, and 17, 2024)

On April 3, 10 and 17, WPI will be hosting an Accepted Student Day event. As a result, both Park Avenue Garage and Higgins House Lot will be closed until 11:00 AM to accommodate our visiting students and their families.

The following parking lots will still be available:

Hackfeld Lot: 29 Hackfeld Road
East Hall Garage: 37 Dean Street (employees only)
West St. Lot: 160 West Street

Campus Parking Advisory for Inauguration Day, March 22, 2024

The WPI community will welcome several hundred people to the Sports & Recreation Center to celebrate the Inauguration of President Grace Wang this Friday, March 22 at 2 pm. Please note the changes to parking to accommodate our guests.

The Park Avenue parking garage and the Higgins Lot will be closed until 1:00 pm.

The following parking areas will be available for all employees and all students:

Boynton Street South & North Lots; 29 Boynton Street
Hackfeld Lot; 29 Hackfeld Road
Lancaster Lot; 12 Lancaster Street (gate will raise on vehicle approach).
West Street Lot; 160 West Street

Parking During Snowstorm March 3-4 and Over Break

The National Weather Service has forecast another snowstorm, with 6鈥?to 12鈥?expected between Friday evening and Saturday evening, March 3-4, 2023. While this will not impact classes or campus operations, it will impact parking this weekend and over break. For those who are traveling, please check weather forecasts as they may impact your plans.

Parking

In order to allow for snow clearing operations, we ask that all students, faculty, and staff move their cars as follows:

All WPI surface parking lots will be closed as of 8 pm Friday night, March 3.

Employees are asked to use the Park Avenue, East Hall, or Gateway Garages during this time.
Students must move their vehicles from surface lots to the Gateway Garage no later than 8 pm Friday. The Gateway Garage is open now; gates will open upon approach. Vehicles should be removed from the Gateway Garage by 9 pm Sunday, March 5. Students are not permitted to park overnight in the Park Avenue Garage.
All surface parking lots will reopen by 9 pm Sunday, March 5.

If you are leaving campus for the weekend and/or for break:

Employees are asked to check their office space and ensure windows are closed.
Students may leave their vehicles in the Gateway Garage until returning; there is no need to notify campus police.
Students who live in a residence hall are asked to close all windows in residence hall rooms before leaving.

PLEASE NOTE: We expect the City to declare a winter parking ban for this storm; the city will tow cars left on the street during the ban. For information regarding the City鈥檚 parking ban and to sign up for text alerts, go to: Winter Parking | City of Worcester, MA (worcesterma.gov)

Shuttles

At this time, there is no change to the shuttle services or schedules. Should weather conditions worsen significantly, Campus Police will issue an update. If you rely on the shuttle, please plan ahead should conditions worsen. Of note, shuttles will run on their regular schedule to and from South Village to support students coming to main campus for dining.

Dining

As a reminder, during the break, the Campus Center Food Court remains open, while all other dining locations are closed. Check Dine On Campus for hours.

Snow Impact on Campus and Street Parking February 27-28, 2023

Parking Changes for January 25-26, 2023.

Dear WPI Community,

Yesterday鈥檚 snowfall is predicted to be followed by additional snow tomorrow, Wednesday, January 25, into Thursday the 26th. There is no expected impact on classes or campus operations.

However, in order to allow for snow clearing operations, we ask that all students, faculty, and staff move their cars as follows:

All student vehicles in residential lots must be moved to the Gateway Garage by 2 pm Wednesday, January 25.

The garage is now open to all students. As you approach, the entrance gate will automatically open. Students are not permitted to park in the Park Avenue Garage. If you moved your vehicle to Gateway Garage yesterday, you can simply keep it there. Please remove vehicles by 8 pm Thursday, January 26.

Employees working on campus Wednesday, January 25 are asked to use the Park Avenue, East Hall, or Gateway Garages.

All parking lots will reopen by 1 pm Thursday, January 26.

PLEASE NOTE: The City of Worcester will tow cars left on the street if there is a declared parking ban. Review and Update Your Contact Information in WPI Alerts

On Tuesday, January 3, WPI will update WPI Alerts, (also referred to as RAVE Alerts), the notification system for rapid delivery of phone, text, and/or email messages in an emergency or other event or incident that may impact the WPI campus and community. The update will add employee and student cell/mobile phone numbers from Workday to those WPI Alerts profiles that do not already have a number listed.

Why is WPI updating phone information in WPI Alerts?

It鈥檚 critical that WPI has up-to-date contact information in the WPI Alerts system to ensure all members of our community are aware of any emergency and can take appropriate action when necessary.

The cell phone numbers listed in the Contacts section of Workday profiles of all students, faculty, and staff will be pulled into WPI Alerts. If a phone number already exists in WPI Alerts, it will not be overwritten.

Note: The information in the Emergency Contacts section of Workday, which allows WPI to contact someone on your behalf in the event of a personal accident, will not be added to WPI Alerts.

What do I need to do?

Between now and January 3, 2023, please review your personal information in Workday to ensure that your mobile/cell phone information is accurate and up-to-date. We will use this information to update WPI Alerts.

On or after January 4, please review your contact information in WPI Alerts and make any necessary changes. If you prefer not to include your cell phone number in your Workday account but do want it in the WPI Alerts, you can omit it from Workday and add it manually to WPI Alerts. Information in WPI Alerts does not get fed into Workday.

In the future, when your contact information changes, please update both Workday and WPI Alerts so WPI can contact you in the event of an emergency.

2022 Accreditation Assessment Announcement

WPI POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

2022 Accreditation Assessment

Chief Cheryl Martunas of the WPI Police Department is pleased to announce that a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission will be present on campus November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2022, to examine numerous aspects of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Police Department鈥檚 policies, procedures, operations, and facilities.

The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program is a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain best practice standards that have been established for the profession, by the profession. The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program consists of 257 mandatory standards as well as 125 optional standards. To achieve accreditation status, the Department must meet all mandatory standards as well as 55% of the optional standards. Achieving Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence and can only be obtained after a period of self-assessment and certification. The Department began a period of self-assessment in 2014, became certified in 2015, achieved initial accreditation in January of 2017, and was re-accredited in February of 2020.

Of the two hundred fifty four participating law enforcement agencies, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Police is one of only fifteen college and university police departments in the Commonwealth that have achieved Accreditation.

NSO & Upperclass Move In Traffic Pattern & Parking

WPI is excited to officially welcome the Class of 2026 and our incoming transfer students beginning at 9:00am on Saturday, August 20, 2022 and the upper-class residential students beginning at 9am on Sunday, August 21, 2022 and continuing until 7pm on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 to the WPI campus. More than 2,500 students are expected on campus over the course of the coming days to move in, participate in New Student Orientation for Class of 2026 and Welcome Week activities.

In order to ensure a safe experience for the entire WPI community, traffic patterns on WPI鈥檚 campus, and surrounding city streets will be altered, beginning at 7am every move in day. Students will be moving in between 9am-3pm on Saturday, August 20 and between 9am 鈥?7pm on Sunday, August 21 鈥?Tuesday, August 23. Traffic patterns will return to normal after 7pm.

There will be no street parking available on Institute Road.
There will also be no street parking on Einhorn or Hackfeld Roads near the Stoddard Complex.

To aid the faculty and staff, as well as the families on campus between August 20-23, there will be one shuttle operating on Saturday, 8/20 and two shuttles on Sunday, 8/21 for the following times and routes:

Saturday, 8/20: 9am-4pm: Route Gateway to Bartlett Center (only) 1 shuttle

4pm-8pm: Route Bartlett Center to South Village Student Center (only) 1 shuttle

Sunday, 8/21: 9am-8pm: Regular Gateway shuttle 鈥?1 shuttle

9am-8pm: Regular South Village shuttle services 鈥?1 shuttle

Campus Traffic Advisory: Saturday, June 11

Worcester will celebrate its 300th anniversary June 10-12, 2022. The three-day Worcester Tercentennial (which is open and free to the public) will include a road race and a parade on Saturday, June 11; both events may pose substantial traffic and parking implications for members of our community who reside on or near campus, or who are planning to be on campus. See details below.

From 8:00 a.m. 鈥?noon on Saturday, June 11:

Salisbury Street (right turn only onto Boynton Street)
Institute Road
Grove Street (right turn only onto Sagamore Road and Lancaster Street)

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be hosting information sessions and campus tours for students accepted into the Class of 2026 to help give them a sense of what our campus community is all about. These events on Saturday, March 26th, Sunday, April 3rd , Wednesday, April 13th, and Sunday, April 24th will impact campus parking: Park Avenue Garage and Higgins House Lot will be closed to employees and students until 10:30 am on these days.

Temporary Changes to Campus Transportation Services

As we welcome students back to campus for C-Term/Spring semester, we are temporarily modifying the campus shuttle program to help residential students access the grocery store and campus dining facilities while we are in Stay in Place/Yellow Level status.

Price Chopper Loop

WPI will run a shuttle to and from the Price Chopper grocery store at 221-223 Park Avenue.

January 22 through January 26: WPI will operate two shuttles on a loop each afternoon/evening from 4 to 8 pm.
January 27 through C-Term/Spring semester: WPI will operate one shuttle on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons/evenings from 4 to 8 pm

Hampton Inn and WPI Townhouses Loop

During Stay in Place, students living at the Hampton Inn, Faraday, and WPI Townhouses can use a new shuttle to access campus for meals. Starting on January 21 and through at least February 11, a shuttle will run from 8 am to 8 pm every day, looping between stops at the Hampton Inn, Goats Head, and WPI Townhouses.

Important Safety Information

Valet Park of America is operating both services. Due to health and safety restrictions:

The shuttles are limited to 50% of their normal seating capacity and will allow seven students per trip.
Some seats will be blocked off to encourage social distancing.
All passengers are required to wear face coverings, and hand sanitizer will be available on board.
Workers will frequently clean surfaces with a disinfectant.

All shuttle service times can be affected by pedestrian and vehicle traffic, volume of riders, inclement weather, and the loading and unloading of passengers. Vehicles are not wheelchair lift accessible. For any wheelchair lift assistance, please call WPI Police at (508) 831-5433.

Please note, the Gateway Shuttle and SNAP (Student Night Assistance Patrol) van will be temporarily suspended while the campus is in Stay in Place/Yellow Level period (at least through February 11). We hope to resume normal operations as soon as possible.

The Annual Security Report also includes information related to campus security and personal safety, including topics such as: crime prevention, alcohol and drug use, missing student notification, emergency response and evacuation procedures, the reporting of crimes and fire safety policies well as information and resources related to crimes of interpersonal violence, including dating violence, domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault.

Parking Advisory: Student Residence Hall Move-In Next Week

Residential students will be moving back to campus next week (August 22 to 30, 2020) in a process much different from previous years. In order to manage building capacity and social distancing, we鈥檙e spreading move-in over several days, and will have students check in at the Gateway Park area before directing them to their specific residence halls on campus for their assigned move-in time.

That means parking will be impacted for a few days and in a few areas. Please see below and, if you鈥檙e working on campus, please plan ahead.

The Gateway Park North Lot, South Lot, Gateway West Visitor Lot, first level of the Gateway Garage, Park Avenue Garage (section identified), Einhorn Lot, Schussler Lot, Institute Lot, Dean Street Lot and Hackfeld Lot (section identified) will be closed to employees and students from Saturday through Monday, August 22 to 24, and again Wednesday through Sunday, August 26 to 30.

The following parking lots will be available:

Boynton St. Lot - (employees, student commuters & visitors)

Hackfeld Lot (section), - (employees, residential, & commuter students)

22 Dean St. Lot (commuters only)

East Hall Garage (employees only)

Winter Weather Accident Reminder

With winter weather in full swing, the Campus Safety Committee would like to remind everyone to be careful on and around campus.

Sidewalks and roadways may be icy and slippery, so please take care to avoid an accident or fall.

Remember:

WPI Facilities works hard to keep sidewalks and pathways clear of ice and snow. If you encounter slick/icy conditions on campus, report them quickly to the Facilities Service Center at 508-831-5500.
If you have an accident or injury on campus and need immediate help, call Campus Police at 508-831-5555.
All accidents, injuries, or near-misses on campus must be reported. Contact your supervisor immediately.

Pedestrian and Travel Safety

Dear WPI Community,

As the clocks roll back November 3 and the daylight hours become shorter, we would like to take this opportunity to remind all WPI community members about pedestrian and traffic safety on and around campus.

In addition to the tips below, please be aware of construction and changes to campus: much of the hill adjacent to Gordon Library and the Boynton Street Lot is now fenced off, requiring pedestrians to use walkways nearest Kaven Hall and Institute Road.

As always, please be mindful of your surroundings, particularly after dark, and use only clear, well-lighted walkways and paths. Program the Campus Police emergency line into your phone: 508-831-5555. Make note of the locations of emergency blue light phones.

Note: SNAP van service begins at 4 pm and runs through 4 am seven days a week. Call 508-831-6111 to request transport.

Pedestrian Traffic Safety

Avoid distractions such as cell phones or other devices that take your attention from traffic.
Cross at marked crosswalks or traffic lights, not in the middle of the block or between parked cars.
Look all ways before crossing.
Make sure drivers see you before you cross the street鈥攖ry to make eye contact before stepping off the curb.
Cross only when traffic has come to a complete stop.
At traffic lights, cross at the beginning of a green light.
- Do not cross once the 鈥淒on鈥檛 Walk鈥?signal begins to flash or once the light has turned to yellow.
- Never cross on a red light.
Watch for traffic turning at intersections or entering and leaving driveways.
Increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing bright or light- colored clothing or reflective strips when walking in dusk or darkness.
It鈥檚 safest to walk on a sidewalk, but if there is no sidewalk, walk on the shoulder and face traffic.

Driver Safety

Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.
Don鈥檛 be distracted by using your phone, talking to passengers, eating, or drinking.
Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning.
Stay alert.
Slow down on residential streets and through school zones.
Never pass a stopped car when approaching a marked pedestrian crosswalk.
Always proceed with caution when passing any stopped vehicle.
Always look for cyclists before opening your car door into traffic.
Do not tailgate. Maintain a sufficient distance from the car in front of you so that you will have plenty of distance to stop.

Construction Site Prep at the Boynton Street Parking Lot This Weekend

Dear WPI Community,

Construction will begin soon for WPI鈥檚 newest academic building, which will be adjacent to Gordon Library, and covering a portion of the Boynton Street parking lot. Beginning October 12, site fencing will be constructed. This will impact parking in the Boynton Street Lot, as well as pedestrian traffic in the area.

Signs will be posted to help pedestrians navigate pathways. Please note that all stairways leading directly from the parking lot to the upper campus will be closed, and the walkway up the hill will also be inaccessible. Pedestrians can use the walkway closest to Institute Road, as well as the walkway and stairs adjacent to Kaven Hall and Fuller Labs. As a reminder, there is elevator access inside Fuller Labs.

Please also note the following changes to parking:

Boynton Street Lot: More than 50 spaces will remain open to faculty, staff, and commuting students. There will be designated short-term 鈥淕ateway鈥?spaces in this lot, closer to the Salisbury Street end of the lot, for faculty and staff traveling back and forth to classes and meetings. At the conclusion of construction, a portion of this lot may reopen.

East Hall Garage: Since the start of A-Term, East Hall Garage has been open at no charge to faculty and staff to help offset the changes to the Boynton lot. Access is via WPI ID card activation of the gate. After construction of the new building is completed, the fee for parking in the garage will be reevaluated.

The Gateway shuttle and SNAP service schedules continue unchanged. The Park Avenue Garage also remains open to all faculty, staff, and commuter students.
