Unfortunately, this has been a costly lesson for some of our students over the past month.&nbsp; WPI Campus Police, The Dean of Students Office, and International House want you to be aware of the risks and have some sense of how you can avoid falling victim.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>To trick victims into paying them, scammers may:</strong></p> <ul> <li><span>Prey on worries related to visas, taxes, and/or studying and working in the US. Often posing as government officials鈥攅ither of the U.S. or other countries鈥攖hey tell victims there is a problem with their paperwork and demand money to fix it.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></li> <li><span>Tell victims that a family member is ill or injured or has been arrested or detained, and demand money.&nbsp;</span></li> <li><span>Tell victims there is a warrant issued for their arrest, and/or a deportation order, and demand money.</span></li> <li><span>Threaten to share compromising information about a victim to employers, family, or friends if they do not make payment.</span></li> <li><span>Insist on keeping you on the phone while you take out your money. This is to monitor your interactions with others, it is not a normal request and should immediately raise red flags.&nbsp;</span></li> <li><span>Insist victims buy gift cards or electronic equipment, or pay money up front as a condition of a job offer or other situation. The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program consists of 257 mandatory standards as well as 125 optional standards.&nbsp; To achieve accreditation status, the Department must meet all mandatory standards as well as 55% of the optional standards.&nbsp; Achieving Accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence and can only be obtained after a period of self-assessment and certification. Due to health and safety restrictions:</p> <ul> <li>The shuttles are limited to 50% of their normal seating capacity and will allow seven students per trip.</li> <li>Some seats will be blocked off to encourage social distancing.</li> <li>All passengers are required to wear face coverings, and hand sanitizer will be available on board.</li> <li>Workers will frequently clean surfaces with a disinfectant.</li> </ul> <p>All shuttle service times can be affected by pedestrian and vehicle traffic, volume of riders, inclement weather, and the loading and unloading of passengers. Vehicles are not wheelchair lift accessible. Program the Campus Police emergency line into your phone: 508-831-5555. Make note of the locations of emergency blue light phones.&nbsp;</p> <p><br><br> Note: SNAP van service begins at 4 pm and runs through 4 am seven days a week. Call <strong>508-831-6111</strong> to request transport.&nbsp;</p> <p><br><br> <strong>Pedestrian Traffic Safety</strong>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li>Avoid distractions such as cell phones or other devices that take your attention from traffic.</li> <li>Cross at marked crosswalks or traffic lights, not in the middle of the block or between parked cars.</li> <li>Look all ways before crossing.</li> <li>Make sure drivers see you before you cross the street鈥攖ry to make eye contact before stepping off the curb.</li> <li>Cross only when traffic has come to a complete stop.</li> <li>At traffic lights, cross at the beginning of a green light.&nbsp;&nbsp; <ul> <li>Do not cross once the 鈥淒on鈥檛 Walk鈥?signal begins to flash or once the light has turned to yellow.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li> <li>Never cross on a red light.</li> </ul> </li> <li>Watch for traffic turning at intersections or entering and leaving driveways.</li> <li>Increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing bright or light- colored clothing or reflective strips when walking in dusk or darkness.</li> <li>It鈥檚 safest to walk on a sidewalk, but if there is no sidewalk, walk on the shoulder and face traffic.</li> </ul> <p><br><br> <strong>Driver Safety&nbsp;</strong></p> <ul> <li>Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.</li> <li>Don鈥檛 be distracted by using your phone, talking to passengers, eating, or drinking.</li> <li>Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.</li> <li>Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning.</li> <li>Stay alert.&nbsp;</li> <li>Slow down on residential streets and through school zones.&nbsp;</li> <li>Never pass a stopped car when approaching a marked pedestrian crosswalk.</li> <li>Always proceed with caution when passing any stopped vehicle.</li> <li>Always look for cyclists before opening your car door into traffic.</li> <li>Do not tailgate.&nbsp;Maintain a sufficient distance from the car in front of you so that you will have plenty of distance to stop.</li> </ul> <p><br><br> Thank you for working with us to increase safety and reduce the risk of accidents around the campus. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Campus Police at 508-831-5433 or the Student Affairs Office at 508-831-5201.<br><br> Best regards,</p> <p><br><br> WPI Campus Safety Committee&nbsp;<br><br> &nbsp;</p> Thu, 31 Oct 2019 12:00:00 +0000 admin /news/announcements/pedestrian-and-travel-safety Construction Site Prep at the Boynton Street Parking Lot This Weekend /news/announcements/construction-site-prep-boynton-street-parking-lot-weekend <p><strong>October 11, 2019</strong></p> <p>Dear WPI Community,</p> <p>Construction will begin soon for WPI鈥檚 newest academic building, which will be adjacent to Gordon Library, and covering a portion of the Boynton Street parking lot.&nbsp;<strong>Beginning October 12,</strong> site fencing will be constructed.&nbsp;This will impact parking in the Boynton Street Lot, as well as pedestrian traffic in the area.&nbsp;</p> <p>Signs will be posted to help pedestrians navigate pathways.&nbsp; Please note that all stairways leading directly from the parking lot to the upper campus will be closed, and the walkway up the hill will also be inaccessible. Pedestrians can use the walkway closest to Institute Road, as well as the walkway and stairs adjacent to Kaven Hall and Fuller Labs.&nbsp; As a reminder, there is elevator access inside Fuller Labs.</p> <p>Please also note the following changes to parking:</p> <p><strong>Boynton Street Lot</strong>:&nbsp; More than 50 spaces will remain open to faculty, staff, and commuting students. There will be designated short-term 鈥淕ateway鈥?spaces in this lot, closer to the Salisbury Street end of the lot, for faculty and staff traveling back and forth to classes and meetings.&nbsp;At the conclusion of construction, a portion of this lot may reopen.</p> <p><strong>East Hall Garage:</strong>&nbsp;Since the start of A-Term, East Hall Garage&nbsp;has been<strong> open at no charge to faculty and staff</strong>&nbsp;to help offset the changes to the Boynton lot. Access is via WPI ID card activation of the gate.
